Sven B. Schreiber (sbs) The "Early Cartographers" are - so to speak - the "folk rock edition" of the post-progressive band "inFictions". You'll immediately recognize the voice of Ed Cartledge, and you're probably not surprised to find out that he's the main songwriter here once again. It seems that everything he begins emerges as something special, something unusual, something brilliant in the end. This album is another proof. Favorite track: In the Old Days.

Wormholes 04:01
Spent some time at the edge of a precipice. Took some risks, missed some hits. Nobody shook my hand that day. Nobody shook my hand. Spent some time at the edge of a burning lake. Skimmed some stones, broke some bones. Nobody shook my hand that day. Nobody shook my hand. Spent some time shut away hoping to save face. Lacked the grace. I erase you all. Nobody shake my hand today. Nobody shake my hand! To the wild: we hope to see you soon. To the end: we have some words for you. Nobody haunts me this way! Miles away, we learn to hide. Lost for ages and tongue tied. The scene was without any sound. The people screamed out loud, A silent crowd. Don't give up, find wormholes That lead into unknowns. That people come and go Is all you need to know So to outgrow... To the wild: we hope to see you soon. To the end: we have some words for you. Nobody haunts me this way! Won't somebody shake my hand today. Won't somebody shake my hand.

Thread 03:18
I experience life in a day. I stagger through, losing my way. I step into the mouth of a maze. I clutch the thread. I clutch the thread. If I could have stayed lost in the world I might have been someone who could Have entered here, purest of heart. I lost the thread. I lost the thread. At the wasting of the day Colours lie. As the waters fill the caves Echoes lie. There's a Minotaur inside There's a Minotaur inside As the creature encroaches on me, I am home. As the creature approaches in me, I am home.

Roundabout 04:31
I like the sun When it decides to come along. But I don't like the sound Of its thousand footsteps passing me by. A roundabout Spins me round and around. A safety net Bounces me up to the sky To show me my life. Am I on my own? Just a speck of dust in a one way town? Is there nothing left to do? But get myself onto the news? A roundabout Spins me round and around. A safety net Bounces me up to the sky To show me my life. I'm floating inside. Don't pass me by. Just show me the way to some life. I ask the sun If it has ever put a foot wrong. It doesn't make a sound. Just surrounds, astounds and acts all high and mighty. A roundabout Spins me round and around. A safety net Bounces me up to the sky To show me my life To show me my life To show me my life To show me my life....

Counterfeits 03:47
Wait.  The light.  The dark.  The flash.  The sameness of the landscape.  Trying to keep ourselves afloat  as counterfeits proliferate.  Strange to think the same as you.  The dolls are in their houses.  All of this is yours to own,  these echoes and reflections.  Its suits anyone.  And sits any way.  Buy, improve upon.  We'll sell anyone  down the river.  Hate to see these corridors  become the paths of fables.  Hail the false economy. A turning of the cables.  It suits anyone.  And sits any way.  Buy, improve upon.  We'll sell anyone  down the river.  Two lives in circles.  Whirlpools and supernovae.  Takes time to slow down.  Does anyone feel the same?

If the old days are done, And nothing holds for times to come, Paint a black line across my eyes, To leave them closed and keep them close. All of the signals that keep you still, They're forgeries, they'll make you ill. All of the signals that keep you home Are make-believe, a dead-end show. All of the rivers and springs of your mind Will interact with unfashionable tides. Where do you start the day from, When the knowledge that you need Is locked in isolation? They need you at the door.
7.
I have been like the wolf  A heart in his mouth  A viralist.  A violent end to the film I made.  My mind had strayed  To centre stage.  It's OK.  You can see this astronaut,  Unlike the one you sought  Floating away in silence.  I should list all the things I can do well,  Acquire new wealth.  This painted face, this global stage,  I had been framed,  My name's been made.  It's OK.  You can see this acrobat,  Struggling to stay intact,  Floating away in silence.  It's OK.  You can see this acrobat,  Struggling to stay intact,  Floating away in silence.  Don't be so careless now.  Don't be so careless now.  Just like the wolves.  Grinning from ear to ear.  These films I make all end with violence.  Don't be so careless now.  Don't be so careless now.  Don't be so careless now.  Don't be so careless now.

Safe Place 04:07
In some wintry storms, Safeness in the night Comes through Closely guarded scenes, Streams in memories And my home. Oh, don't run. When days turn into nights. Nights become the cage from which you run. But find calm Floating in a stream, Rushing through the reeds and glimpse the Sunrise. Built by design. Conjured in confined Unseen spaces. Half the world away, Someone thinks the same, Mirrors you. Oh, don't run. When days turn into nights And nights become the cage from which you run. And find calm Floating in a stream, Fingers through the weeds and glimpse the sun's rise... One by one, You can peel the layers back from All your other lives. Chase me in the night. Clutch my fingers One by one, You can count the days as they're gone. You can sail away. Find your safe place. And find calm And find calm And find calm

Where do you stand on the question of knowing the answers? Were you shattered by that news That seemed to you no use? Where would you be if it weren't for your indoctrination? In quite a state, In quite a nation. Follow me into the temples of worshipful actions Part with your cash Cash in your tensions Everyone's famous and painted all over the papers Cross both my palms I'll act like your agent. Follow me into my deepest insides. And cover my eyes from behind. The wishing well is dry. There's nowhere left, nowhere left to try. You sound like a broken man. A hostile fan who won't recognise that it's over When it's over. You sound like you could use a break. Let those old feelings go. I was only trying to show you The centre of this black hole.

Illuminators 04:35
A language no one has spoken in years Is heard through the crackling noise. Until a translator comes, we'll be here Tied to a stake by our ears. Illuminators Try to keep the volume down And release our sounds. A scene surveilled by a head in the sand Distant, without control These voices might be conspiring an end. Confessing a truth that they stole. Illuminators Try to keep the volume down And release our sounds I hope you always look to the skies, the stars. One day they might come back to you. You say that silence was all you had. You said that science was all you cared about. You say it's easier to trust all the manuals you kept on the shelves in your basement. You hope that someone can take you away..... Stars illuminate Silence, Silence

about

The debut album by Sheffield, UK-based acoustic collective 'Early Cartographers'.

"It’s the transient moments of gorgeous melody and mature musicianship that help to bridge the gap between the traditional folk sound of the band and a more contemporary aesthetic, with sonic links to outfits like Midlake and Beirut. The complex instrumental arrangements give the album a refined and rich texture without ever sounding overdone or tired."
